What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that reshapes the nose for cosmetic and/or functional reasons. Even patients who don’t think they are having problems with nasal breathing can usually benefit in their breathing from a well done functional rhinoplasty which addresses structural issues. Think of it as fixing up a house—you need to work on the structure as well as make the roof look nice! It will also refine the nasal bridge, tip, or nostrils, and correct asymmetry. Surgery of anything more than the tip will likely be performed under general anesthesia with careful monitoring to protect your airway.

There are two main approaches:

  • Open Rhinoplasty: A small incision is made underneath the nose across the columella (the tissue between the nostrils) for greater access and precision. This incision is usually well hidden and nearly invisible afterwards.
  • Closed Rhinoplasty: All incisions are made inside the nostrils to further reduce visible scarring.

Benefits of Rhinoplasty

  • Improved nasal appearance and facial balance
  • Correction of nasal asymmetry, bumps, or drooping tip
  • Enhanced breathing and nasal airflow
  • Long-lasting results tailored to your goals
  • Boost in confidence and self-image

Who Is an Ideal Candidate?

You may be a good candidate for rhinoplasty if you:

  • Are in good overall health
  • Are dissatisfied with the appearance of your nose
  • Have nasal obstruction or breathing issues
  • Have realistic expectations about outcomes
  • Have completed facial growth (typically age 15–17 and older)

Patients often seek rhinoplasty after injury, due to congenital asymmetry (something they are born with), or simply to feel more confident in their appearance. A consultation with an FSPS member surgeon can help determine the right approach for you.

The Procedure Process

Initial Consultation

Your FSPS surgeon will evaluate your nasal structure, listen to your goals, and review options for reshaping the nose. They will explain the surgical plan, expected outcomes, and recovery details. They may do something called “morphing” where your surgeon alters your photo electronically to show you how your nose might look after surgery. They may also discuss other balancing features of your face to look at with your new nose, most commonly your chin.

Day of Surgery

Rhinoplasty is typically an outpatient procedure. Depending on your unique needs, the surgeon will reshape cartilage, bone, and soft tissue to achieve your goals—while maintaining or improving nasal function. A medication to reduce your bruising is now commonly used which really helps recovery. And most of the time you don’t need all that packing that was used during older rhinoplasty techniques, so you can breathe through your nose after surgery.

Immediate Aftercare

After surgery, a nasal splint may be placed to support the new shape. Swelling, bruising, and congestion are common but temporary. Pain is usually well-controlled with prescribed medication.

Follow-Up Visits

Your surgeon will monitor your recovery over several weeks to months, guiding you through healing and evaluating your results. Your nose will typically continue to look even better during the first year after surgery.

Recovery and Aftercare

Most patients return to light activities within a week, though swelling and bruising may last 1–2 weeks. Full results may take several months to refine as residual swelling subsides. Avoid strenuous activity and protect your nose from impact during early recovery.

Results: What to Expect

Rhinoplasty results are highly personal and often life-changing. Expect improved facial harmony and enhanced function. The final outcome becomes fully visible once swelling resolves—typically within 6 to 12 months—and is designed to be long-lasting.

Risks and Considerations

As with any surgery, rhinoplasty carries some risks, including bleeding, infection, asymmetry, difficulty breathing, or need for revision surgery. Choosing an FSPS member surgeon ensures experienced, board-certified care with a focus on both form and function.

Frequently Asked Questions

Costs vary based on surgical complexity and location. Your surgeon can provide a personalized quote during your consultation.

If rhinoplasty is performed to correct breathing problems or injury-related deformities, insurance may partially cover it. Purely cosmetic procedures are typically not covered.

Results are long-lasting, with most patients enjoying lifelong improvement. Normal aging will continue, but your nasal shape should remain stable.
