The most well known brand of neuromodulator is Botox, made by the bacterium clostridium botulinum. Botox has been used for decades to treat medical conditions such as blepharospasm, strabismus, and migraine headaches. In the late 1980’s ophthalmologists noticed that patients being treated for these conditions often developed noticeable reductions in facial wrinkles. Over the next few years Botox was used “off label” by many plastic surgeons to specifically treat facial wrinkles. Botox was approved for cosmetic use by the FDA in 2002.
