What Are Facial Fillers?
Facial fillers are injectable treatments that add volume to the face, smooth lines, and enhance facial features. They are most commonly used to restore youthful contours lost due to aging, weight loss, or genetics. The majority of fillers today with brand names such as Juvederm, Restylane, Versa, and RHA are made from hyaluronic acid (HA). HA is a naturally found occurring substance in the body, although the majority of these injectables are made synthetically. They all have slightly different properties for different areas and purposes. Your surgeon will be able to customize your filler choices to your needs. Another common injectable treatment often thought of as a filler, which isn’t really a filler, is poly-L-lactic acid (Sculptra). This product has small microspheres which stimulate your body’s own collagen production over time in order to enhance volume.
Types of Fillers
Hyaluronic Acid (HA) Fillers
These fillers—such as Juvederm®, Restylane®, and RHA®—mimic the body’s natural hyaluronic acid, and also water which helps plump the skin and underlying tissues. They are ideal for lips, cheeks, nasolabial folds, tear troughs, and fine lines. HA fillers can be reversed with an enzyme called hyaluronidase.
Sculptra (Poly-L-Lactic Acid)
Sculptra works by stimulating your body’s own collagen production over time. Unlike HA fillers, it doesn’t provide immediate volume but gradually builds it over weeks to months. It’s often used for hollow cheeks, temples, jawline definition, and overall facial rejuvenation.
