Labiaplasty
in Florida

Every woman has her own unique features. Her vagina is no different, and there is no such thing as a “normal looking” vagina. While each woman’s vagina has its own characteristics and beauty, there are instances when a woman chooses to alter the appearance. Vaginal asymmetry and excess enlargement of vaginal tissue may prompt a woman to seek labiaplasty surgery. “Vaginal rejuvenation“ may be pursued with aesthetic and functional goals.

What are Labia?

Your labia are the folds of skin around your vaginal opening. You have two folds of skin in this location. The outer folds are called the labia majora, which means large lips. These are the larger, hair bearing fleshy folds that protect your external genital organ. The inner folds are called the labia minora, which means small lips. These skin folds protect the opening of your urethra (where your urine leaves your body) and vagina.

What is Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that reduces or increases the size of your labia. It may restore lost vaginal function and appearance.

The procedure is safely performed under local anesthesia in the office of a Board-certified Plastic Surgeon or under general anesthesia in an accredited surgical facility.

Reasons a Patient Seeks Labiaplasty

Patients may have medical, physical, cosmetic and emotional reasons to seek Labiaplasty. Medical and physical reasons include improvement in hygiene to remove excess tissue that makes cleansing more difficult. Patients may also have physical discomfort secondary to excess redundancy of the labia minora that pinches or pulls while walking, exercising, or during sexual activity.  Labiaplasty reduces the size of the labia minora so they don’t protrude beyond the edges of the labia majora. In some circumstances, patients have had trauma to their genitalia and may seek reconstruction to improve the function and appearance.

Cosmetic and emotional reasons include desire for a more even shape of the labia. Surgery may improve comfort, confidence and sexual health during intimate contact.

What Causes Labia to Grow?

The size and shape of the labia can change due to several natural factors. During puberty, hormonal shifts stimulate growth and development. Pregnancy and childbirth often cause stretching and changes in tissue. Weight fluctuations can also affect the appearance, as can genetic predisposition. Additionally, menopause and other hormonal changes later in life may contribute to variations in labial size.

Benefits of Labiaplasty

  • Improved aesthetic features with better symmetry and contour
  • Removal of excess vaginal tissue
  • Improved hygiene and health
  • Boost in self-esteem after vaginal trauma

Who Is an Ideal Candidate?

The best candidate for Labiaplasty is a woman who desires an improvement in her vaginal function and/or appearance. She should have a thorough conversation with her Board-certified Plastic Surgeon prior to surgery, in order to discuss realistic expectations and achieve the best surgical outcome.

The Process

Initial Consultation

Your surgeon will evaluate your anatomy, review your goals, and explain the options that are best for you.  He or she will explain the details of the planned operation including risks, benefits, and alternatives and how you can work together to limit your risks and achieve or surpass your desired results.

Day of Surgery

The procedure is performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on your needs and conversation with your Plastic Surgeon.

Immediate Aftercare

You’ll be monitored in a recovery area and return home with soft pads and mildly compressive pants to decrease swelling.

Follow-Up Visits

Your Board Certified FSPS surgeon will guide your healing process and carefully monitor your progress with scheduled follow-ups.  Post-operative care is an important part of recovery and getting your best result.

A consultation with an FSPS member surgeon is the first step to understanding whether labiaplasty surgery is right for you.

Recovery and Aftercare

Initial downtime ranges from 1–2 weeks, with light activity encouraged as you heal. Most patients return to normal routines within 4–6 weeks. Swelling will gradually subside, and results continue to refine for several months. Following your surgeon’s instructions is key to optimal healing.

What to Expect?

Patients will have improved vaginal symmetry, and “tidy” appearance. The redundant labia minora (inner lips) tissue will be removed with the goal for optimal symmetry. Any discomfort due to vaginal asymmetry prior to the surgery, should resolve as well.

In cases of more complex vaginal reconstruction, patients may have a prolonged recovery time.
